About Omega Ophthalmics
A Bright Vision
for the Future.
Our Origins
In 2011, while flying home from an American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgery (AECOS) symposium in Orlando, Dr. Gary Wortz began reflecting on a persistent challenge in cataract surgery: the variability in lens position and refractive outcomes. He questioned why, despite advances in lens design and surgical technique, outcomes remained inconsistent. The insight was simple but powerful—if there were a stable foundation inside the capsular bag, refractive accuracy could be significantly improved.
The capsular bag itself presented a unique opportunity. As the thickest basement membrane in the human body, it contains no nerve endings, no blood vessels, and limited fibrotic potential—making it a uniquely privileged space.
From this realization, the concept of the Gemini capsule emerged: a three-dimensional silicone ring designed to expand and stabilize the capsular bag, maintain an open space, and provide a consistent foundation for lens placement.
Cataract Surgery
By the Numbers
Cataract surgery is one of the most frequently performed procedures in the United States and around the world, improving vision for millions each year—yet the data reveals both its extraordinary scale and the meaningful opportunity for better outcomes.

4 Million
Cataract surgery procedures performed each year in the United States alone
50%
Half of cataract patients still need some form of corrective lenses after cataract surgery
$12 Billion
The global intraocular lens market is projected to reach $12.47 billion by 2033
